Don’t let the bastards grind you down…
Margaret Atwood tells an extremely powerful story of resilience and the price women pay when living in a system never built for them. We follow the journey of Offred as she lives through a patriarchal authoritarian distortion of the United States now known as the Republic of Gilead. Living as a handmaid, you are essentially a spiritual concubine expected to have children for the Commanders and Wives of this republic. Where she is little more than a vessel for the ambitions of a life, she is not welcomed to enjoy freely. Margaret Atwood answers the question of, what happens if the separation of church and state collapses in a patriarchal society…
What makes Offred's story so unsettling is the correlation between legislations being proposed today in the United States and the steps taken for Gilead to form that are jarringly similar. Don’t get me wrong, these exact laws have not passed, but it doesn’t seem so far fetched from our current reality. This also being inspired by real world events gives the additional layer of the truth being stranger than fiction that really made this hit a nerve for me.
Overall, this book felt like discovering something new in every chapter. Margaret Atwood is absolutely spectacular and absolutely knows how to form a sentence, this was beautifully written book and a solid 4.5 ⭐️ read for May!!
